MAZDA/FORD GF4A-EL/GF4EAT HARSH UPSHIFTS

COMPLAINT: 1993 & up, vehicles equipped with GF4A-EL transaxles, may exhibit a harsh 1-2 upshift or harsh upshift complaints when "hot", before or after overhaul. More car diagnostic tool to konw? Line pressure appears to be normal or slightly higher than normal 60-70 psi. at idle and 161-172 psi. at stall when checking in the "D" range when the vehicle is "cold." Although when the vehicle gets "hot" the pressures get irratic and or exceed the stall pressure specs, which are 175 psi. in "D" and 300 psi. in "Reverse."

CAUSE: The cause may be, a faulty Pressure Control Solenoid, a worn Boost Valve and Sleeve and/or a worn Pressure Regulator Valve bore which is part of the Rear Control Valve Body.

CORRECTION: Replace the Pressure Control Solenoid as shown in Figure 1, with Ford part number F32Z-7G136-AA or Mazda part number FU9A-21-1G1A. Inspect the Pressure Regulator Valve and the Pressure Regulator Valve bore for wear or scoring as shown in Figure 2. If the bore has "shiny" spots where the Valve rides a "New" Rear Control Valve Body can be purchased from Mazda. Inspect the Boost Valve and Boost Valve Sleeve for wear or scoring, and replace as needed with Sonnax boost valve and sleeve as shown in Figure 2.

A1: Yes, this is actually the genuine CAT adapter, It is also the ONLY recommended adapter for CAT ET, but obviously other ones will work. It will work fine for the version you have, and 2011C is actually the newest version.
Q2: What is the difference between a cat comm II & Cat Comm III. Is one just a usb connection and one serial? Also, will this unit work with my Cat 3126B marine units? Seriel no. 3GS01797 Thanks
A2: CAT Comm II was a serial port model, but since computers are no longer made with serial ports, they changed the design to a USB and called it a CAT Comm III. So you are correct. This unit works with all CAT engines — Marine, on-highway, and off-highway. On Marine units, I’m not sure where they put the plug, but it should be somewhere near the ECM (Typically). It should be either a 6 pin or 9 pin connector.
Q3: Does this work with CAT 3500 natural gas engines and 3600 natural gas engines? Thanks.
A3: If those programs use CAT Electronic Technician (CAT ET) for the software, it will work.
Q4: Can the cat communicate 3 also be used to read detroit and cummins engines if I have the correct software?
A4: Yes, it reads both J1708 and J1939 so it can read both of those. Keep in mind that this adapter only comes with the J1939 adapter end, so I would recommend purchasing the J1708 adapter end from me as well if you plan on connecting to some older stuff.
Q5: will this unit allow me all access to the ecm to alter all areas eg set speed limiter to a lower speed and is there a yearly lic fee.
A5: This device is what you should use if you will be hooking up to both off-highway & on-highway CAT engines. If you are strictly wanting to work on on-highway CAT engines, I would rather see you purchase a Nexiq USB Link .The Nexiq USB Link is universal (Works with CAT, Cummins, Detroit, Allison, etc…), it is cheaper, plus it has bluetooth so you can go wireless.

What’s the Equipment Precautions  ?

Step 1: Read all instructions.

when new releases become available.

Normal Power-up LED Operation
When power is applied to a VCM loaded with software all five LED’s will briefly turn On, single LED sweep from 5 through 1 twice, and 1 through 5 twice, then become ready for use with LED 2 (VCM \Operating) blinking and LED 3 (Power) On steady. This LED sequence is considered a normal VCM power-up/boot-up operation. Following a normal power-up operation, LED 1 (Vehicle Link) comes On/Active when connected to a vehicle, and LED 5 (Host Link) comes On/Active when connected to a host device. Refer to the Troubleshooting section for examples of abnormal LED operation.
Note: The LED status indicator operation sequences are based on the latest information
available at the time of publication. If differences are observed, refer to the VCM Hardware
